No, in most situations, one cannot upgrade a vehicle for free to the extent a computer device allows. This is because the two products are dramatically different in nature and purpose. If a car "product" is made mostly of hardware and needs consumables to function in a physical world, a security router "product" is a combination of hardware and software that must both perform in cyberspace. The nature of the environment is also very different. Cyberspace constantly changes with new/mutated threats and competitive pressure. A good security router, by definition, must be designed to allow capability upgrades, which are largely a function of its software component. Having said that, it is not that extraordinary to receive a software upgrade for the router. Mind you, not all Fortinet routers are receiving FortiOS 4.x. If you think about the 4.x release, there is no other reasonable way to do it, but to follow what Fortinet did and capitalize on the PR side.

I agree with what Darren has to say.
Most of the times we tend to go in full swing when we need to buy a Car,Computer, Mobile etc.
Most of us don't do the homework either because we don't have time or just don't think it to be a good idea.
I had this experience couple of times and after burning my hands few times, i have learnt the trick of buying stuff personally or for the office.
It is absolutely necessary to have a clear understanding of the requirements and budget.
After the above example, i could relate to the products we use which are from Fortinet.
We have few Fortigate boxes and we could easily upgrade the features without even upgrading the hardware. The introduction of FortiOS4.0 has been a premium service update from Fortinet without any kind of cost.
Well, is it possible to upgrade a car without any cost ?
