threat landscape

Over the past several months the news has been full of reports about cybercriminals using malware to shut down devices or networks, steal data, or hold it for ransom. During the second quarter of 2017, over 184 billion total exploits were documented, coming from nearly 6,300 unique exploits. This is an increase of 30% over Q1. While most of these attacks targeted large, commercial networks, there has also been a large spike in such activities targeting the devices and data of individual users. Some of these attacks, like having your... [Read More]

Fortinet just released its Global Threat Landscape Report for Q2. Much of the data it provides is just what you’d expect. For example, FortiGuard Labs detected 184 billion total exploit attempts in Q2 from 6,300 unique and active exploits. Not only is this is an increase of 30% over Q1, with the growth of IoT and Shadownet resources we expect these numbers to continue to rise dramatically. In addition, 7 in 10 organizations experienced high or critical exploits during the quarter. By any measure, these are alarming numbers.  [Read More]

Going wireless with a customer’s network and cloud was once a leap. Now it’s simply the next step. According to Cisco’s latest Global Cloud Index, 92% of workloads will be processed in cloud data centers by 2020, and research from IDG shows worldwide spending on public cloud service will grow to more than $141B by 2019. As the use of the cloud grows, however, the potential attack surface becomes substantially larger and organizations are exposed to new risks. But that’s not all. While technology is evolving, so are customer... [Read More]

With the growth and pervasiveness of online devices and digital tools, we reached a critical tipping point in 2016. The need for accountability at multiple levels is urgent and real and affects us all. If something isn’t done, there is a real risk of disrupting the emerging Digital Economy.   Even in recent weeks, IoT devices were hijacked to shut down a huge section of the Internet. Stolen documents were used in an attempt to influence the US presidential election. Ransomware began to reach epidemic proportions, including high... [Read More]

Providing holistic, actionable security intelligence across the entire IT infrastructure is critical for the future of cybersecurity. Fortinet’s Matti Blecher offers his perspective here. Can you give us a glimpse into the threat landscape from a threat intelligence point of view? What are customers facing today? One of the biggest security challenges organizations face is being able to see enough of the network to identify today’s most advanced, multi-vector threats. Ideally, you need to be able to see across the distributed network,... [Read More]

The threat landscape is in a constant state of evolution, and the arms race between cyberguardians and cybercriminals has been heating up dramatically over the course of the last year. An additional 20 billion IoT devices will be connected to the network by 2020, along with expansive growth in personal end user devices, forcing individuals and organizations to face an exponentially expanding attack surface bound to the borderless cyberspace. Fortinet’s Matti Blecher offers some perspective on this and how threat assessment can help.An interview... This week Fortinet released its latest Threat Landscape Report - a collection of threats, attacks, and data collected from live production environments of all sizes and types. As part of our Cyber Threat Assessment Program (CTAP), enterprises and organizations were given the opportunity to place one of Fortinet’s high-performance FortiGate NGFW appliances inside their networks to see just how many threats and attacks attempt to (or successfully) gain purchase inside their infrastructure. Some key findings in the report include: unexpected... [Read More]

Trust is a tricky thing. It’s hard to gain, easy to lose, and exceptionally difficult to win back. Following the Edward Snowden disclosures and ongoing wrangling in Congress and the courts about privacy, monitoring, and data collection, trust between the public and private sectors, especially in the IT and security space, has been in short supply. It comes as no surprise then, that more than a few companies and individuals in the security industry have pushed back on government efforts to increase data sharing and collaboration around threat...
