While the scale of this data breach is alarming, the attack they suffered is not unique. Far too many organizations have adopted state of the art network designs and yet still rely on isolated second-generation security solutions and strategies to protect them. More than ever, security cannot be an afterthought. It requires planning, people, and processes combined with adaptive security technologies that can dynamically scale to today’s digital networks and automatically respond as an integrated system to address the advanced cyberthreats. In recent years we have seen a surge in the way companies have leveraged technology to drive new revenue streams and create a unique competitive advantage in the marketplace. The companies that have been the most successful are the ones using Artificial Intelligence (AI). AI is already being used by hundreds of companies all over the world. We have seen retailers being able to predict what their customers will order based on their previous order history, automobile manufactures using car data to provide a better driving experience, and even locally... Over the past several months the news has been full of reports about cybercriminals using malware to shut down devices or networks, steal data, or hold it for ransom. During the second quarter of 2017, over 184 billion total exploits were documented, coming from nearly 6,300 unique exploits. This is an increase of 30% over Q1. While most of these attacks targeted large, commercial networks, there has also been a large spike in such activities targeting the devices and data of individual users. Some of these attacks, like having your... [Read More]

Fortinet just released its Global Threat Landscape Report for Q2. Much of the data it provides is just what you’d expect. For example, FortiGuard Labs detected 184 billion total exploit attempts in Q2 from 6,300 unique and active exploits. Not only is this is an increase of 30% over Q1, with the growth of IoT and Shadownet resources we expect these numbers to continue to rise dramatically. In addition, 7 in 10 organizations experienced high or critical exploits during the quarter. By any measure, these are alarming numbers.  [Read More]

Today’s schools are technology-rich environments. For example, they have long used internal systems to keep and track a variety of records, including the personal data of their students and faculty. Today, however, that tech infrastructure must be optimized to accommodate the shift to a new digital education model. Teachers are increasingly adopting new digital learning tools, with $9 billion being spent on K-12 digital curriculum tools in 2016. While schools often provide some devices for faculty and students, bring your own device (BYOD)... [Read More]

A look back and forward for our 2017 Cybersecurity Predictions. Threats are compounding at digital speeds, while resolutions, like manufacturers building security safeguards into their products, are proceeding at a snail’s pace. We need to start building security into tools and systems on day zero. We need alignment on ways to effectively see and combat new cybercrime. And we need to adopt integrated, collaborative, and automated procedures and technologies end to end to help us see and protect resources. [Read More]
