As the Internet and Digital Economy have grown up, the humble Firewall has continued to serve as their go-to security appliance. In this first of a two-part series, we will examine how, in spite of the evolution of the Firewall through a number of shapes, functions, and roles, it remains the security foundation for implementing the strategic pillars of Segmentation, Access Control, and Real-time analytics/action now and into the future. Change is a fact of life; what doesn’t change usually withers and dies. This is true for both the biological... [Read More]

Q: You joined Fortinet recently after three decades in cybersecurity roles in government, including most recently the NSA. What has that experience taught you about the nature and scope of the threats that organizations face these days? Some people say that street cops and detectives see an especially negative view of humanity, because, more often than not, they are called to assist with an unlawful or sad situation.  Similarly, coming from the foreign intelligence business, you get a first-hand view of what foreign adversaries aspire to... On Wednesday, Dan Kaminsky delivered the opening keynote address at Black Hat. His talk was entitled, “The Hidden Architecture of our Time: “Why This Internet Worked, How We Could Lose It, and the Role Hackers Play,” and detailed the challenges and risks of the Internet, and what vendors need to do to fix it. Central to his presentation was a discussion of his new hardened browser, IronFrame, and a new firewall technology called Autoclave. Both are built on the premise of hardening and isolating environments in order to reduce... [Read More]

Healthcare organizations have taken more than their fair share of security hits lately. The  bad news continued this week with yet another data breach announcement for Medical Informatics Engineering, an Indiana-based healthcare software company, and an FDA warning to stop using Hospira’s Symbiq medication infusion pump. The data breach involved 3.9 million people, exposing names, addresses, Social Security numbers, and other protected health information. The company reported the breach late last month but news of the nearly 3-week... [Read More]

I just finished watching the first episode of Mr. Robot, the new show on USA Network about “a cyber-security engineer by day and vigilante hacker by night...recruited by a mysterious underground group to destroy the firm he's paid to protect”. Let’s just get this out of the way upfront: It’s a great show. It’s good television in its own right, but the real genius is in the way it doesn’t bother dumbing down the geek-speak for the sake of viewers who aren’t nerds looking for something to fill the void... For the second year in a row, BlackHat Asia was held in Singapore, at the end of March, in the luxury Marina Bay Sands hotel. As usual, the 2 days briefings were fully loaded of plenty of topics. 3 distinct tracks were offered, plus the business track (briefings sponsored by companies) and of course the technical Arsenal rooms. This year Fortinet had a booth, I was asked to help. We had a lot of great conversations with prospective customers and passerby generally interested in industry trends. I was also able to attend some briefings,... [Read More]

A lot of people know me for my perspectives on ed tech, but lately, I’ve started down the security rabbit hole. And it goes pretty deep. Ed tech has been a passion of mine for a long time. I started writing about it years ago to make some extra money so I could, ironically, afford to remain a teacher and tech guy for my local school district, The writing turned into something of a career itself, even as I moved between various consulting and full-time gigs, both in and out of education. Eventually, my engagements as an analyst, writer,... [Read More]
