On Wednesday, Dan Kaminsky delivered the opening keynote address at Black Hat. His talk was entitled, “The Hidden Architecture of our Time: “Why This Internet Worked, How We Could Lose It, and the Role Hackers Play,” and detailed the challenges and risks of the Internet, and what vendors need to do to fix it. Central to his presentation was a discussion of his new hardened browser, IronFrame, and a new firewall technology called Autoclave. Both are built on the premise of hardening and isolating environments in order to reduce... [Read More]

The Show Floor I’m always interested to walk the show floor the first day of a conference to get a sense of what the vendor community has decided is important. The show floor at Black Hat is especially interesting, because while most of the vendors are responding to the security demands of their customers, just upstairs researchers are demonstrating the next generation of threats that haven’t yet, for the most part, been addressed. A quick walk around the floor shows two major trends. The big bets vendors are making are cloud security... [Read More]

Q&A on Encryption with Aamir Lakhani Encryption remains a hotly debated topic of discussion in cybersecurity. Fortinet’s Aamir Lakhani offers some perspective on what customers think about encryption today and going forward. Why is encryption currently such a hot topic? Privacy is a major concern right now. The Edward Snowden leaks in 2013 made people more aware than ever about their lack of privacy. They have also raised such questions as: Do we have a fundamental right to privacy? How far do we protect privacy? In the past,... [Read More]

As the major data breaches affecting healthcare organizations continue and new security concerns around the "Internet of Medical Things" emerge, the presence of healthcare IT professionals at Black Hat is timely. It’s becoming clear that we’re quickly moving into a much more dangerous environment for healthcare where security needs to be top of mind. Jonas Tichenor talked to Fortinet’s senior systems engineer for healthcare, Robert Marcoux, earlier today about Black Hat, healthcare, and our ability to mitigate... [Read More]

This year’s Black Hat keynote speaker, Jennifer Granick, gave her talk to applause yesterday rather than the boos and/or skepticism that have greeted other recent speakers. In a nutshell, she delivered a powerful call to action to preserve the hacker ethic, keep the Internet open, and make way for innovation and the hands-on exploration she called tinkering.  At the same time, she was clear that security is critical to this openness and to building safe places that respect and protect our privacy. It was a great message and interesting... [Read More]

Healthcare organizations have taken more than their fair share of security hits lately. The  bad news continued this week with yet another data breach announcement for Medical Informatics Engineering, an Indiana-based healthcare software company, and an FDA warning to stop using Hospira’s Symbiq medication infusion pump. The data breach involved 3.9 million people, exposing names, addresses, Social Security numbers, and other protected health information. The company reported the breach late last month but news of the nearly 3-week... [Read More]
